Composer Simon McKechnie is a London based composer, producer and arranger. In twenty years of professional experience Simon has had the pleasure of working with many great musicians. Amongst these have been commissions to write for brass quintet Golden Section, baroque group The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments and Roberto Pla's Latin Jazz Orchestra. On the jazz side Simon has worked with Don Weller, Graham Flowers, Kathleen Willison, Victoria Newton, Roland Perrin and many others. In 1998 Simon formed the Latin Jazz group Azul. The group performed at many theatres, jazz clubs, and arts centres including dates at Marlborough Jazz Festival, and The National Theatre Square. Azul’s 2004 tour was The Guardian Guide’s jazz pick of the week. The group’s 2002 CD Beautiful People was played was played on many stations including the BBC Radio 3 shows Jazz Line-up and Late Junction.

Simon has also written many works for theatre including a musical on the life of prizefighter Daniel Mendoza with book and lyrics by author Gary Waterman. The music from the show is Sephardi, Spanish and Latin in origin. It was first performed at Greenwich Theatre in May 2005. Other commercial work has included writing arrangements for recordings by for Riverdance lead singer Morgan James, and Swingle Singer Jes Sadler; and writing music for The Victoria and Albert, The Science and Reading Museums.

Originally a jazz guitarist, Simon has performed in the UK and abroad with many different groups such as Brazilian show band Yes Brazil and even a country group called The Trophy Husbands. Contributed music to series 1, 2 and 3 of BBC World News series The Real, Composed music for ten short films for series Cambridge Ideas for The University of Cambridge.
